Abstract:
As bark has the protective function on a tree, in this study was tried to use spruce bark as facade panel. The right choice of resins and manufacturing parameters raised difficulties due to less research in this area in the past. However, phenol formaldehyde resin and the tannins of the bark with and without hardener were used as adhesive. Finally high densified boards with comparatively good mechanical properties could be observed. Additionally it was shown, that tannins and hexametylentetramin can react as adhesive and no additional synthetic resin is required. The hygroscopic properties of all boards showed weak results, which is a result of the high densification, the hygroscopic bark and the particular resin. At least, the thermal properties showed good results. However, bark boards in this configuration is not ideal for the usage as facade element. At the end some suggestions for further improvements were made respectively other possible fields of application were recommended.
