Iron and steel are important materials in construction and vehicle manufacturing but are also essential components of machines, tools or consumer durables. The objective of this master thesis was to determine the stock quantity of iron and steel in Austria through a bottom up analysis by using detailed statements of inventory lists, the estimated weights and metal shares of products and units. The use of steel scrap is an important factor to diminish economic and political dependences and represents a substantial contribution to environmental protection by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and saving non-renewable resources like iron ore. As a secondary raw material, scrap can be reused in a new production cycle, but therefore detailed analyses about the composition and sectoral distribution amoung the anthropogenic stock is needed. This bottom up analyses tries to provide the information need. The results indicate a total anthropogenic iron and steel stock in Austria of 43.7 Mio tonnes, whereby the different sectors contribute as follows to the overall stock: vehicle sector 17%, construction 52%, machinery 14% and metal ware 17%.
