Due to the results of the variety testing, the variety "Tandem" is one of the most worthful cocksfoot breedings for permanent grassland in Austria. However, the seed propagation area of "Tandem" has decreased drastically since 2009. The reasons are non-satisfying yield as well as high production costs, both leading to low profit. In order to identify the underlying factors and to increase the economic outcome, the seed Propagation process of the Austrian cocksfoot variety "Tandem" was observed and analysed on three farms with differing climatic and site-parameters. Twelve square-meter-samples were taken from each field for gathering the potential yield. Additionally, the samples were dried in two different systems. A representative sample of the harvesting material was stored under ambient temperature respectively in a cold-storage room. Every sample was tested for moisture content, purity, thousand seed weight and germination capacity. The highest yield loss was caused by premature threshing at the phenological stage of milk ripeness. If the harvest takes place quite early, at the beginning of the wax-ripe stage of the seeds with comparatively high moisture Content, a slower drying could increase the viability of the seeds without negative effects on seed Quality. Dried cocksfoot seeds (< 14 % moisture content) could be stored for at least half a year under room conditions without losing germination capacity. The achieved yield of certified seed is the main factor for an appropriate profit. Without direct payments, yields under 500 kg/ha, do not reach positive profit contribution in the long term (except for basic seed production, with a considerable higher product price). At current product price for certified seed a yield of 800 kg/ha should be target.
