This master thesis deals with wind energy and its potentials in the example of Lower Austria, taking especially account of topics related to energy efficiency. In the framework of this master thesis it will be determined to which extent political, legal and environmentally relevant measures have an effect on wind energy. Moreover, economic considerations as well as those concerning energy issues with regard to wind energy are made. In addition the thesis responds to the potentials of wind energy in Lower Austria in relation to other federal countries. The results show that political and legal framework particularly influence the development of wind energy (first and foremost the Green Electricity Act). Taking the efficiency into account it shows that large wind power plants which are subsidised according to the Green Electricity Act are costeffective and pay off whereas this is not the case without subsidies. Small wind energy plants are usually not cost-effective and do neither pay off energetically nor economically. As for the potentials of wind energy it has to be said that Lower Austria shows the most ambitious potential for expansion compared to other federal countries.
