Goal of this master’s thesis was development of a guideline for design for recycling for wooden windows and wood-aluminum windows (ww & w-aw) within the international CaReWood project. This guideline should provide help for developers and producers of ww & w-aw for improvements of the reusability and recyclability of their products. Background for this work is the fact, that high quality wood profiles are usually used for energy recovery after their useful life of 25 to 40 years. However, due to many reasons a further utilization of the raw material would be eligible, a so called cascading use. At the beginning a comprehensive literature research about the historic development and the current status of the window production was done. Furthermore design-for-recycling-guidelines of other branches were collected and analyzed. On that basis a guideline for ww & w-aw was composed, which’s focus is on the reuse of the wood elements. Current trends and developments in the window industry rather impede reuse and recycling than facilitate it. Complex constructed frame profiles, for instance, can hardly or only with high effort be separated into reusable elements. Also the suspicion of the treatment with wood preservatives makes a material recycling in the wood-based panel industry impossible. The guideline should help to find solutions for these and other problematic areas and create awareness at all the involved parties for the topic of “design for recycling”.
