The production of automobiles is more and more based on a combination of multiple materials for structural components. Wood has a high specific strength and is a suitable material for such applications. In order to facilitate wood industry based companies to be part of the automotive production environment, specific quality management requirements have to be fulfilled. Suppliers of original equipment manufacturers are already responsible for around 80% of the part production in a car and are increasingly involved in the product development as well. This process is higly regulated to enable a sound product and manufacturing process. This work shows essential quality management tools of the product development process which is known as advanced product quality planning. Among these tools are the failure mode and effects analysis, the control plan, statistical process control and the measurement system analysis. Possible applications of this tools are shown in the example of a back seat panel, produced from wood composites. To compare the wooden component with the materials of the original design a cost analysis of the production process was made.
