In previous studies, diatomaceous earths and sheet silicates have been used to characterize activation energy, crystallinity and free formaldehyde content of the cured UF-resin and also internal bond strength in particleboards. In the present study there was the novel attempt to characterize different additives of diatomaceous earth (5 samples) and sheet silicates (13 samples) concerning particle size distribution (I), influence on pH-value and gel time (II), variation of viscosity (III) and finally increase of the adhesive strength (IV). Different concentrations (0 - 100%, based on solid resin) were investigated for three different adhesives (two different urea-formaldehyde and melamine-urea formaldehyde). The hypothesis of the study was to increase adhesive strength by reducing penetration (I) and increasing of the cohesion strength (II) of the different adhesives. Based on the testing of the single-lap shear test (A.B.E.S-method) special additives (Supreme™ and Mica SFG70) can significantly increase adhesive strength properties (30 - 40%) despite the substitution of resins (21%) with the additives.
