- Abstract:
- The documentation of the excursions of the Austrian Soil Science Society represents a valuable source of extensive and high-quality knowledge for the study of soils in the field. Over the course of decades, experts have gathered knowledge on soil types, sites and local conditions, which they then recorded in field guidebooks. The aim of this thesis was to gather this information, adapt it to present standards and make it available for modern soil science.
For that purpose the soil profiles are examined and compared. A short historical outline of the development of thematic focuses and destinations is given. Additionally, the data of selected excursions are collected, thoroughly analysed and elaborately illustrated. The results are adapted according to the currently valid Austrian soil systematics. Furthermore, they are standardised to the requirements of the digital Soil Information System in Austria (BORIS).
The scientific methods, emphases and results of the analyses have changed significantly over the decades. The available broad findings are an important contribution to the research and understanding of Austrian soil profiles. Ulitimately, this work serves as a best-practice model for converting old data of field guidebooks to a modern standardised system.
