- Abstract:
- To prevent soil erosion many Austrian winegrowers keep the inter-row zones of their vineyards green in some way. However, the intensity of these greening strategies differs varies and depends mainly on the personal experience of the respective winegrower. To measure possible effects of inter-row management on soil physical parameters we selected paired vineyards with different inter-row management in two winegrowing regions of Austria, Carnuntum and Leithaberg.
The results indicate that total organic carbon is higher and bulk densities are lower under permanently grassed inter-rows. In addition, percolation stabilities were increased for permanently grassed inter-rows compared to temporarily tilled inter-rows. However, no significant difference regarding hydraulic conductivities (saturated and unsaturated) was observed. The potential of no tillage or less frequent tillage lies in the accumulation of organic carbon, lower bulk densities and higher stability of soil aggregates.
