Due to their low density and thermal conductivity rigid foams can be used as lightweight and insulation materials. The production of rigid foams out of renewable resources like cellulose, lignin or tannin as insulation materials gains increasing attention because of the dependency of the commercial synthetic insulation materials on petrochemical products. Sugar beet cossettes, a lignocellulosic by-product of the sugar industry, are considered as a new potential renewable resource since they incur in high amounts. As they show good self-sticking characteristics, new functions and applications of this material are predicted. A rigid foam out of fibrillated sugar beet cossettes was developed by linking the sugar beet fibers produced in a refining process with a polymer. The established foams were characterized via microscopy and the thermal conductivity, density, compression strength and water uptake or more specifically the material leakage were determined. These sugar beet foams showed low density (37-72 kg/m3) and low thermal conductivity (0,037-0,038 W/(m*K)), which enable them to be used as insulation materials.
