Abstract:
The objective of this study was to analyse the use of a wireless crane scale in timber transport in terms of its accuracy and loading efficiency. In addition, a process analysis and a literature review on alternative systems for determining loading weight of vehicles have been carried out. The legal aspects for the use of a crane scale on log transport trucks have been clarified and a cost calculation based on the process analysis has been made. The examined wireless crane scale is a product of Epsilon Kran GmbH in cooperation with the Swedish company Tamtron Timber. Overall, about 167 hours of time study material were collected and divided into 17 different process steps. The load weights by crane scale were compared with data taken from calibrated weighbridges installed at sawmills or pulp and paper mills. The average deviation of 21 loads compared to the actual weight was 3.44 per cent. The comparison of loading efficiency in min/m³ before and after the installation of the wireless crane scale showed no significant differences. Concluding, the cost calculation shows that the crane scale causes additional costs of € 1.450 per year which is compensated by its use. Since the prices for log transport cannot be appointed as a flat rate, three different transport models based on the collected data have been developed. Resulting from these scenarios a target price in Euro per cubic meter is featured.
