The timber industry in Austria is a vital and heterogeneous economic sector and thus inextricably linked to appropriate standards, in which quality criteria for wood products are defined. The knowledge of existing standards is significant in the production and marketing of the products. The material flow models represent a need analysis of important standards and directives in the wood industry, which must be considered in the process flow of the production. The work delivers an assignment of the standards to the various process steps and locate the exact position of the relevant standards in the whole wood flow of Austrian forestry, wood-, and paper industry. By using wood flow models, the positions at which the relevant standards intervene and become effective in the value chain of the wood processing industry, is concretized. The wood flow models provide information of the number of standards, respectively the need of standards is determined for different products and product groups. The linkage of those constructed material flow models with data of wood consumption in the whole supply chain, gives an idea about the economic importance of several branches and depict the ratio of wood demand to product supply and therefore the efficient utilization of the forestry resources. By a clusteranalysis the products with similar requirements of standards and wood input could be grouped together, which gives the opportunity to make a comparison between wood products in regards of these two aspects.
