In daily practice there are several challenges for female farmers, who manage their farms, which can cause increased physical and psychical stress. Based on the conducted literature review it became clear that there is a de-traditionalization on Austrian farms and there are 34% female farmers in Austria, who manage their farm and 41% family working women. Physical and mental stress of farming females while working with farm machines used for tillage and sowing has not yet been evaluated. Everyone reacts to strain caused by the work with these machines in a different way concerning ones differences in constitution and knowledge. The aim of this study is to point out, how different females react to strain while working with machines used for tillage and sowing and which factors affect these different reactions. Therefore, a study was carried out on seventeen farms in Austria with seventeen women. A partly standardised questionnaire was used. The farmers were asked about specific questions concerning their farm and the mechanisation, their personality and their health. The results, which had been analyzed descriptively and statistically, showed that the most stressful or unmanageable activity, independent of the machine (physical and psychical) is the preparatory work. While doing the follow-up work by the plow, the psychical stress tends to correlate with the body height. The factor sporting activity affected significantly the mental stress of the female farmers while doing the preparatory and follow-up work with the cultivator. In addition, sports tend to differ on the mental stress while doing the cultivation. Moreover, the mental stress plays a significant role in the physical stress effected by the factor health, while doing the main work with the harrow. Concerning the main work with the harrow, there tends to be a connection between a regular further training in agricultural engineering and the mental stress as well as a very significant difference of the factor mechanisation on the mental stress.
