Abstract:
The need for noise protection measures has greatly increased in recent years. Conventional noise barriers of concrete, aluminium, wood or steel are almost exclusively used. An attractive alternative to the conventional noise barriers is the vegetated earth wall reinforced with geosynthetics. However, vegetated steep earth walls are scarcely used due to the lack of experience in design and construction. In this thesis, a research project for geosynthetics reinforced earth walls is presented. A test wall with a total length of about 70 m, which is divided into seven test sections of 10 m each, is constructed. The wall in each test section is built with a different construction system. We consider all aspects of the different construction systems, e.g. installation methods, fill and reinforcement materials and vegetation. The test wall is extensively instrumented by extensometers, horizontal inclinometers and geodetic survey. The construction cost is an important factor in choosing the appropriate noise barrier systems. Therefore, the cost of geosynthetics reinforced walls is analysed in detail. The relevant cost includes among others material, manpower, transportation and landuse. It is shown that the geosynthetics reinforced earth walls present an attractive alternative to conventional noise barriers under both ecological and economic considerations.
