Abstract:
Abstract: The present master thesis concerns the future of solid biomass as an energy source in Austria. In the course of this the energetic use of biogenic solid fuels – mainly wood chips, wood pellets, sawing by-products, straw and firewood - is analysed. Analysis of economic conditions for a decentralized supply of smaller towns, communities as well as of industrial facilities with electricity, heat and cooling is the centrepiece of this thesis. In this context, energy-related aspects of producing biogenic energy for long-distance and short-distance heating, storage, distribution as well as generation of electricity are investigated. Qualitative expert interviews were conducted to answer on the one hand the question, whether increased usage of solid biomass for energy production could fulfil the expectations of the energy experts and on the other hand whether solid biomass will remain to have a central role in Austria's energy provision.
