Abstract:
The company KRISMER from Tyrol, Austria is specialized in slope stabilization with soil bio-engineering methods. This company has been using three-dimensional steel mesh for slope stabilization for more than 20 years. The slope stabilization is based on a combination of soil nailing, steel mesh and fill material forming a semi-flexible structure on the slope surface. The steel mesh has a three dimensional strcture and is thereby able to resist bending moments. Until now the calculation of the bending moment was based on the moment of inertia from the upper chord and the bottom chord. The stiffening influence of the filling material, which is used for drainage, was not considered. The aim of this thesis is to study the influence of different filling materials on the bending moment. Altogether, 17 three-point bending tests are carried out. The evaluation of the test results for the modulus of the elasticity is based on the Hooke's law and an additional correction factor. The calculated values are similar to the previous values, used for the dimensioning of system KRISMER in the past. The tests show evidence for the previously accepted work area for elastic deformations. The increase of the modulus of elasticity due to the filling material could not be proved. This is mainly due to the fact that the fill materials are squeezed out of the steel mesh. Further tests should be conducted with steel meshes where the fill material can be kept in place.
