Agriculture in Austria is increasingly confronted with a continuing intensification. This can be seen on the one hand in the increasing intensification of agricultural land, where a clear trend towards three and more uses is noticeable, and on the other hand in the increasing milk delivery performance in Austria due to fewer, but high-yielding cows. This situation is hindered by the fact that weather extremes, such as hail, frost, drought and flooding, have increasingly led to problems in the Alpine region over the past decade. The sensitive mountain region in particular is severely affected by the consequences of climate change. For this reason, a field experiment was established in 2011 in Imst, an inner-alpine dry zone. In this trial, 14 different seed mixtures from Austria, Italy and Switzerland were tested over six years for yield, quality and botanical characteristics. Imst in the “Tiroler Oberland” is one of the driest regions in Tyrol and in addition, there are often very low temperatures in the winter months. Therefore, the different seed mixtures were divided into groups and mixtures for dry sites, mixtures for rough sites and mixtures for intensive management were compared. The mixtures for dry sites did not provide the expected additional yield. In addition, the mixtures were examined for their endurance and competitive strength, and mixtures that were based on a wide range of species in their composition proved to be more enduring and competitive than mixtures with only a few species components.
