Abstract:
The improvement of mechanical properties of wood by increasing its density has been known for decades. There are two noteworthy methods that lead to a densification of the wood: the storage of polymers in the cells and the pressing of wood. Nonetheless, very few publications have been written on this topic in recent years. Furthermore, until today, there are not many products, which make use of this property. This master thesis deals with the production of a composite from partly delignified, densified wood chips. The used wood chips come from a kraft-pulp-mill. The partial delignification makes it possible to densify the wood cell wall easier. The wood chips were divided into three fractions based on their size and then joined together to boards with four different adhesive systems. Boards were produced from previously densified wood chips as well as from previously impregnated non-densified wood chips ("prepregs"). The wood chips were examined by microscopy, three-point bending test and contact angle measurement. The produced boards were characterized by three-point bending test, pressure test, impact test and thickness swelling test. The results were compared with a reference sample from spruce chips and ÖNORM requirements. Although the improvement of the mechanical properties, by the densification of wood chips, could be confirmed, the manufacturing process has to be optimized. The composites have too high variability of the mechanical properties within the boards. Furthermore, the results of thickness swelling are not optimal. The boards made from "prepregs" could not be tested due to their poor nature. Nonetheless, this manufacturing process should get more additional research.
