Within the framework of this research work, various infiltration areas in Vienna were examined for their geotechnical and vegetation technical properties during the vegetation period 2018. The aim is to check the installed substrate variants for their suitability for installation in infiltration areas. At the same time, the development of plantings and applied seed mixtures are to be documented. For this purpose, a total of 16 substrate variants were installed in the SAVE research project at three different test sites, 27 woody plants of six different genera were planted and three different seed mixtures were applied. The substrates were tested for infiltration rate and load capacity. The growth of planted shrubs was observed in terms of growth, vitality, shoot length growth, degree of branching, damage, foliage emergence / shedding, salinity in the leaf mass, leaf area index and thermographic stress behavior. In addition, seed mixtures were applied and their coverage, plant height, grasses: herbal ratio, inflorescence, vitality, frequency of the individual species, salt content in the leaf mass, biomass and thermographic stress behavior were documented. The data obtained from the measurements were evaluated for the individual parameters and displayed in the form of a master matrix for each test site. On the basis of the results of this matrix, a ranking of the substrate variants and vegetation was made. The total result per location is calculated as the sum of the two subareas. The results show that the SAVE substrate variants have good or sufficient infiltration rates for drainage surface areas. In comparison, a standard tree substrate performed less well and achieved mostly insufficient infiltration results. The development of woody plants and seeds shows differences depending on the respective substrate variant.
