The aim of this thesis was to investigate the influence of irrigation, tillage and crop rotation on the yield and yield structure of wheat, pea and maize. This thesis is part of a long-term experiment that started in 2002 and is carried out at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna. The focus of the study is to assess three agronomic measures: irrigation, soil tillage and crop rotation. The irrigation is divided into irrigated (3x40 mm) or non-irrigated, the tillage in plough (24 cm working depth) or with cultivator (15 cm working depth). In crop rotation the following three variations are compared: grain maize – winter wheat, grain maize – winter wheat – yellow mustard, grain maize – winter wheat – yellow mustard – pea – yellow mustard. The results showed that the use of irrigation increased grain yield in maize. Irrigation also had a positive effect on plant height and above-ground biomass. A higher thousand grain weight was achieved for both wheat and maize by irrigation. In the case of wheat, effects of crop rotation were observed on the unirrigated plots. So the wide crop rotation (KM-WW-Gs-E-Gs) increased the grain- and above ground biomass yield beyond those of the other crop rotations. Dry conditions led to a longer corn less tip of the corncobs. Irrigation also had a positive effect on the nitrogen yields in the grain and in the biomass of the maize plants. An extension of the crop rotation led to a higher biomass yield of maize and to higher nitrogen yields in its crop residues. The agronomic measures had no significant influence on yield and yield components of pea.
