- Abstract:
- Wood is a renewable material which has been used for thousands of years due to its broad range of properties. The mechanical properties and the swelling behavior of wood can even be improved with specific methods like delignification, densification and impregnation. This is exactly what has been accomplished in this master thesis. Raw spruce veneer was first chemically treated in two different ways to partially remove lignin and hemicellulose and then impregnated with phenol-formaldehyde-resin with different concentrations. Half of the samples were dried in a drying chamber and the other half were densified in a hot press. The veneers were then glued together to get five-layered laminated veneer lumber (LVL). The LVL were tested on their binding strength in a three-point flexure test and on their moisture absorption behaviour with a 24-hour swelling test. The results showed that the combination of delignification, impregnation and densification had positive effects on the mechanical properties and on the swelling behavior.
