The subject of this thesis is a three-factorial field experiment on winter poppy cropping (Papaver somniferum L.) carried out in Eastern Austria. The crop growing was performed without any application of fertilizer and under conventional conditions without irrigation. The influence of three different factors, i.e. sowing date, seeding rate and row spacing, on yield, and yield components were investigated in the vegetation period 2017/18. Furthermore C- and N-contents of separated plant organs were analyzed. The results show increased seed yield and above ground dry biomass in plots sown earlier in autumn. Row spacings of 25 cm and 50 cm resulted in higher seed yield than row spacings of 12,5 and 75 cm. Sowing date, seeding rate and row spacing had impact on several yield components, while differences in nitrogen content and nitrogen utilization efficiency were rather small. Seeding rates of 0.05 g m-2 were sufficient for the development of an optimal yield structure. Furthermore, capsules developed from lateral shoots were observed to be smaller, to contain less seeds and to develop seeds with a lower thousand kernel weight compared to the terminal capsules. Moreover, the N contents in seeds developed from terminal flowers were increased. A synchronous flowering of terminal and lateral poppy heads occurred. The average harvest index was 28.4 %. Only row spacings of 75 cm reduced the harvest index, which was found stable throughout all the other variants.
