Abstract:
The forest sector already contributes to the mitigation of climate change effects by carbon sequestration and further contributions could be made by saving fossil fuel through recuperating energy in timber harvesting operations. Due to the large share of forests in steep terrain, cable yarding plays an important role in Austria and about 19% of the timber is extracted by cable yarding. Recently, energy recuperation technology has been introduced in cable yarding, and more precisely, in carriage technology. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of different operation parameters (yarding distance, lateral yarding distance and tree volume) on productivity of yarding with a tower yarder and energy recuperating carriage. To this end, a detailed productivity and process analysis was carried out for a Koller K 307C-H tower yarder with an energy recuperating ESK 2.0 carriage during a thinning and a final felling operation in uphill yarding direction. Separate productivity models were developed for each operation type. In addition to that, a life cycle analysis and cost calculation were conducted for the tower yarder and the carriage. The parameters tree volume, lateral yarding distance and yarding distance had a significant impact on productivity, of which tree volume had the strongest. In the thinning operation, average tree volume was 0.18 m³ and about 72 m³ of timber were yarded during 120 cycles at an average productivity of 4.76 m³/PSH15. In the final felling operation, average productivity was 14.91 m³/PSH15. Average tree volume was 1.00 m³ and about 125 m³ of timber were yarded during 104 cycles. Respective harvesting costs were 21.26 €/m3 for the thinning and 16.79 €/m3 for the final felling operation.
