Larch wood is much appreciated for its beautiful colour, its excellent mechanical properties and most of all for its high natural durability. These properties vary across species, provenances and growth sites; and also within individual trees stems. In this work wood colour and anatomical features of heartwood of several larch species (Larix decidua, L. kaempferi, L. eurolepsis), various provencances, origins or growth sites were investigated relative to their resistance against brown rot. The CIELAB system was used to measure wood colour. In this system the value L can be thought of as a lightness factor, positive b represents yellow, negative b represents blue, positive a represents red, and negative a represents green. Measured at the radial wood faces reddishness was the most significant single factor separating the growth sites and the provencances. Analyses of ring widths and latewood proportions also resulted in sigificant differencies of the investigated groups. Correlations between natural durability on the one hand, and ring widths, latewood on the other, were weaker than a correlation with wood colour. Investigations of microscopic parameters were less prominent; only resin duct density was significanly linked with natural durability.
