Based on the resolutions of the UFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Conferences in Toronto (1988) and Kyoto (1997) carbon dioxide emissions shall be reduced by 13 % respective 20% to the 1990 level until 2008/2010. In addition to that the European Union has passed a Directive defining that as of 2005 2% biodiesel shall be added to conventional fossil diesel fuel and gradually to raise this level up to 5.75% until 2010. The augmenting demand for fossil mineral oil in Asian countries such as China and India and the heavily rising oilprices of the past two quarters 2004 has promoted research and development acitivities for alternative engery sources. The renewable resource Rape (Brassica napus L. var. napus) offers a variety of possible uses. This thesis gives an introduction to the criteria of production and utilisation of Rape. Constantly new kinds of Rapeseed with a higher oil containt and with fatty acid patterns that are adapted for new forms of utilisation are launched. This thesis offers some research on the use of Rape as fuel and lubricant. In order to use Rape in conventional diesel use it has to be processed via transesterification and additives. Aim of research is the use of pure vegetable oil as fuel, especially due to the lower toxical pollution of emissions. In this context the 100-Schlepper-demonstration program in Germany is introduced. For the safe use stipulations of corresponding demands on quality and standards for exhaust gas have to be met. Lubricants are another possible use of Rape. The currently offered range of products of vegetable lubricants reaches from hydraulic oil, engine oil, formwork release oil, cutting oil, frame saw oil to anticorroosive oil and lubricantive oil. In this context the characteristics of readily biodegredable lubricants and hydraulic liquids. Possibilities to reduce of phosphorus are investigated. In addition to that ways to reduce additives and antioxidation in order to raise the biodebredability are demonstrated. In this context the SWIFT-test ¿ well known from food industry ¿ modified for vegetable lubricants by BLT, Wieselburg is introduced. Finally the unproblematic use of rape oil lubricants in hydraulic systems is demonstrated
