This thesis was concerned with the effects of thermal modification on the adhesion between a polar wood surface and nonpolar thermoplastics. Adhesion between wood fibers and matrix material is of major importance for the production of WPC products, because the interface has to transfer the forces which occur during a mechanical load. Heat treatment initiates chemical reactions of the different components in the wood. In the course of this modification wood experiences not only a structural change, but also extensive changes of the specific characteristics, e.g. wetting behavior or color. For the determination of the wetting ability of the thermally modified wood surfaces of beech (Fagus sylvatica L. ) and spruce (Picea abies) the contact angle measurement was used. The color changes induced by the thermal treatments were evaluated by colorimetry (CIELAB system). The improvement of the adhesion between the thermally modified wood surface and the thermoplastic LDPE was tested by examination of the internal bond, lap joint strength and fracture energy. The penetration behavior of the thermoplastic and the occurrence of a mechanical interlocking were checked optically, respectively. It could be proved that the adhesion between wood and thermoplastic in the interface was improved by thermal modification.
