The coating treatment of weather protected window constructions has so far been done in the same way and with the same coating materials as for normal wooden windows. To obtain sufficient durability, however, it is obvious that the requirements for the coatings on these windows can be lower because the wooden frames are protected against direct weathering. Detailed investigations on the moisture protection of wood coatings on weather protected wooden windows were carried out to obtain data on the humidity stress on the wooden frames of these windows and to find the optimal moisture protective properties of wood coatings for this application. The experimental work included simulations of exterior and interior humidity stress on coated wood/aluminium windows, computer modelling of steady state moisture diffusion through coated wood/aluminium windows and natural weathering of coated wood/aluminium windows. From the results of the experimental work and additional experience out of research and practice, a requirement profile for wood coatings on weather protected wooden windows was derived. This requirement profile is meant to be a suggestion that forms the basis for future standardisation work in the relevant committees. The suggested requirement profile would allow the use of clear wood coatings with low dry film layer thickness for weather protected wooden windows. This should encourage paint producers to develop innovative coating systems with tailor-made properties that could offer new ways of design and marketing as well as the possibility to reduce production costs of weather protected wooden windows.
