The aim of this work is to merge the published knowledge on the topic ?drying of wood for energy production?. The influence of harvesting date on the water content of wood is discussed and it is described how the water content varies in different parts of the tree and how this water is bound to the wood structure. The drying process for wood and especially for fuelwood is outlined and it is described how this effects the quality of fuelwood regarding heating value, storability and biological decomposition. The theoretical knowledge is supported by results from field experiments published by different authors. A short view is taken on the ecological aspects, as well as on relevant standards at European and Austrian level. Drying methods for field and technical use are described and discussed. In addition to the literature review a calculation for the energy consumption of a wood plate under field conditions is presented.
