This paper discusses the results of bringing forward the seed of spelt by 6 to 8 weeks, from October to mid of August, on the development of stand, yield and specific parameters of quality. In an experiment ¿ lasting one year ¿ the influence of thickness of seed, variety and the existence of an undersown clover was examined. Extreme weather conditions - especially in August and September - lead to a heavy incrustation of soil which again influenced growth and development of the stand. The spelt that has been sown in summer was affected by a higher number of illnesses. Furthermore considerable vegetation of weed was detected. In spite of the unfavourable supply of nutrient as a consequence of the extreme weather conditions and the higher number of illnesses the spelt sown in August achieved respectable results. It also outperformed the crop sown in October as far as specific parameters of quality are concerned. Overall the results of the experiment imply to stick to the conventional date of seed in October, particularly when we talk about favourable corn production areas. For border regions and areas where extensive agriculture is conducted (e.g. alpine valleys, the Austrian ¿Wald-¿ and ¿Mühlviertel¿) a further experiment with adjustments in the phrasing of thesis is recommended.
