Abstract:
This thesis aims at comparing three different methods of describing the bonding strenght of different woods. Therefore the results of the lap joint testing system according to EN 302-1 were compared to the following two other methods: lap joint test with scarfed glue line geometry and evaluation of strain energy release rates of glued "double cantilever beam"- samples (DCB- samples). These tests were performed with two wood species (spruce and beech) and five different adhesives (MUF, Casein, PRF, PUR und PVAc). It can be summarized that both methods, the scarf joint samples as well as the DCB- samples show different shear strength values and different strain energy release rates of the analysed adhesive- wood- combinations, respectively, whereas the tests with the lap joint samples according to EN 302-1 did not show any significant differences in this work. In most cases these lap joints showed about 100 % wood failure and therefore represented the shear strength of the wood used in this series of experiments, and not bond strength.
