A model on resonance wood quality affecting parameters and their interactions has been derived from a state of the art on existing knowledge about resonance wood of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.). Based on this, acoustical and anatomical as well as mechanical and optical material properties covering several hierarchical levels have been chosen to basically characterise Norway spruce resonance wood. The sample collective has been gathered from numerous renowned resonance wood regions in Europe and covered the whole range of available qualities. The measurements have been opposed to subjective quality gradings by violin makers, who estimated the acoustical, optical and over all suitability for violin making. Multiple linear regression models have been applied to investigate the predictability of the subjective gradings by the use of measured material characteristics.
