Wood based products made of long strands show better mechanical properties in comparison to flake boards and fibre board. Additional, the low grade wood could be use as the source material. The goal of present study is to present a development of a new wood based panel from thinnings. A new method for production of the oriented strands so called Makrofaser should be found. Experiments in the laboratory and a comprehensive recherché of literature and patents leaded to a special press-roll technology. The second goal was to develop a wood-based panel from this long strands with high mechanical and physical properties as a comparative product to commercial multilayer wood based panels. This study deals with the whole production of Makrofaser panel in the laboratory scale. Different chapters describe the production steps from the long wood strands production, trough possible chemical or physical modification of wood, up to the mat forming, gluing, and pressing of the product as well as the analyses of the product properties. A concept of industrial production based on the laboratory technology was developed. Besides the further design and development of the press-roll technology, the possibility to modification of Makrofaser in terms of the thickness swelling was investigated. The optimal gluing of the strands was the next work package of this study. The results from the mechanical testing of the Makrofaser panel show excellent bending strength and Young¿s modulus. Mechanical properties of the Makrofaser panel are noticeable higher as the mechanical properties of conventional OSB panels.
