- Abstract:
- Increasing demand for timber and an increase of lumber yield require second thoughts for transportation of round wood. Centred in mind is the reduction of transportation costs. The modes and means of transportation and their functionalities were analysed. A round wood freight cost measurement instrument was engineered to calculate and enable a comparison between the variable distance costs for road, rail and inland vessel transport. This showed that the use of multiple point transport is only profitable for Austrian distances with a direct road transport between the forest and the second loading point. Cost reducing effects in combination with the rail (Str.kl.D, 15 km pre carriage) can already be measured in distances over 50 km. The efficiency of the river in comparison to the road transport is dependant on the length of the pre carriage, and can be used from 80 km onwards if no after carriage is claimed. The vigour for the enforcement of rail transportation shows cost reducing effects when in combination with a short pre carriage. It is therefore important to implement a single point pre carriage with combined modes of transportation and to sustain regional routes and terminals.
