The properties of wood-based products are influenced by many parameters, which include the chemical structure of wood. In this thesis-work the five domestic wood species Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, Fagus sylvatica, Quercus robur and Populus spp. divided into juvenile and mature wood were chemically analysed. Thereby the content of holocellulose, lignin and extractives as well as pH-value, buffer capacity and the contents of volatile organic acids and formaldehyde were determined. In addition differences of chemical properties between industrial timber and saw timber were analysed. During the wet chemical analyses of the wood samples alternatives to the classical, time-consuming Soxhlet extraction method were tested. It was compared to the automatically "accelerated solvent extraction" (ASE) method and to the ultrasonic method, but the last one did not work for wood meal. The higher content of extractives by ASE is on the one hand explainable by a complete extraction and on the other hand a decomposition of polyoses because of the high temperature. Analyses showed that there is no influence on the following lignin determination. Therfore the ASE method for producing extract-free wood meal for lignin analyses is saving a lot of time and solvents.
