Modification of solid wood with gaseous ammonia is primarily applied and targeted for a change in the natural wood colour. Furthermore, liquid and gaseous ammonia treatments are used for the temporary plasticization of wood. The effects on colour and on the plastic properties are researched partly intensively. However, investigations of mechanical properties after modification procedure with ammonia were scarcely described the literature. The aim of this thesis was to investigate, therefore, the mechanical and physical properties of three different wood species (spruce, pine, oak) after modification with gaseous ammonia. For this purpose, the selected samples of each study were cut in the middle. The first half remained, untreated and served as a reference, whereas the other half was for the ammonia treatment. The experimental design can be reduced the effects of natural variability of the properties of wood. The investigations revealed that the gaseous ammonia treatment of the investigated species caused no significant changes in the mechanical and physical properties. Concerning the colour change an intense brown was observed for oak samples. However, spruce and pine showed significantly less discoloration. Therefore, gaseous ammonia treatment is available an effective method for modifying the optical and decorative properties of wood, without affecting mechanical properties.
