Abstract:
The objective of this work was to investigate the durability of adhesive joints after cyclic climatic exposure by using different test methods (lap joint test, scarf joint test and tensile test perpendicular to grain). The samples were bonded with three different adhesives (MUF, PRF und 1K-PUR), which are admitted for load-bearing timber structures and subsequently loaded by cyclic modified climatic conditions. One cycle of accelerate aging consists of three stages: wetting (50°C / 95%r.L.), freeze storage (at -20°C / slowly descending moisture) and drying (75°C / 15%r.L.). Residual strength of samples after 12 and 24 climatic cycles was compared with the strength of untreated samples, which were investigated by universal testing machine. Against primary expectation it was observed, that the strength of bonded samples increased after 12 climate cycles. This might be caused by post-curing of adhesives. Aging effects of the adhesive were observed only after 24 climatic cycles. The results of this study showed that the selected climate cycles are basically suitable in order to accelerate aging mechanism of adhesives. However, for a clear differentiation between different types of adhesives is necessary to increase the number of cycles significantly. Further examinations are necessary to investigate changes of the interphase between wood and adhesive.
