The microstructure in wood based panels plays an essential role for production and material performance. In particular, the void structure in the various materials, in addition to the actual characteristics of the raw materials, has also an impact on the material properties during production and end use. The present work focuses on evaluation methods of the microstructure of oriented strand board, particleboard and medium density fiberboard. A key task is to evaluate known methods for analyzing the structure of wood based panels with particular reference to void proportion and to develop, if necessary, improved or new methods and select the most appropriate methods for evaluation applications. 3D images were acquired by X-ray computed tomography and evaluated using methods from image analysis. An important question is also the achievable resolution of the image data of the wood-based panels for structural analysis and the required sample dimensions. The results showed the suitability of microtomic imaging, especially the use of micro-computed tomography and sub-micrometer-computed tomography, for the characterization of wood based products. It was shown that the density determination of wood based panels gained from tomographic data is possible. Other methods of image analysis and mathematical morphology were used successfully for the two-dimensional and three-dimensional characterization of wood based materials. This allowed showing relationships between structure characteristics, specifically void structure and density of the materials investigated.
