Agriculture is changing constantly. Today’s dogmas are different from thosse our predecessors took for granted. New machinery, better technology and budgetary constraints require a rethinking and adjusting of production strategies.The present study compares the differences in yield of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) under different tillage systems for many years. Furthermore extensive investigations took place in the year 2010. Three tillage systems have been tested so far varying in their intense of operation: the plough variant, the conservation variant and the no till variant. All sampling took place in Raasdorf in Lower Austria. The individual variants have been cultivated over many years on a land parcel of the experimental farm of the University of Agricultural Sciences Vienna. The yield, Nmin, grain moisture and soil moisture have been carefully examined. For the year 2010 the increase in biomass has been evaluated in addition to the long-term studies. It can be assumed that the no till variant is not lower in average yield than the others. As far as the grain moisture content is concerned the no till variant was significantly (5 years) higher. This may be an indication for later ripening. The Nmin values differed only from 1998- 2004. From 2004 onwards there was no significant difference found. The ground Water level was different as opposed to the Nmin. The direct seeding variant was significantly higher in the entire study period, although the difference was smaller than expected. The question of whether no-tillage can reduce evaporation, must unequivocally be answered with yes. Especially for arid and semiarid areas of production the no till system provides an interesting alternative to conventional tillage.
