Thermosetting resins have the problem to form brittle glue joints when they are cured. Microfibrillated cellulose has proven promising in improving the mechanical properties of adhesive bond lines. This master thesis demonstrates that this improvement is also useful for the production of oriented strand boards. Microfibrillated cellulose from never dried beech sulphite pulp was produced by homogenisation with a laboratory homogeniser. For the characterisation of the microfibrillated cellulose an atomic force microscope was used. This procedure revealed an average fibril diameter of 36 nm. Two commercially available adhesives, Urea-Formaldehyde adhesive and Melamine-Urea-Formaldehyde adhesive, were modified with microfibrillated cellulose and used for the production of oriented strand boards in the laboratory at the BOKU in Vienna. The specimens with the modified adhesives showed better properties regarding bending strength, fracture energy, inner bonding and swelling in thickness when tested.
