In the context of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000 / 60 EC) of the European parliament and of the council, the Austrian waters should exhibit from 2015 a “good condition” and a “good ecological potential”. Therefore, the aim of the INTERREG IV A project “Gewässer-Zukunft” is an improvement of the water quality of the river Antiesen in Upper Austria. The phosphorus inputs from agricultural cultivated areas have to be reduced. In autumn 2010 and in spring 2011, in a sub catchment of river Antiesen, 590 soil samples were collected for routine soil analyses to assess the nutrient status. Mixed soil samples were taken from the topsoil (0 – 15 cm soil depth). The pools of various forms of phosphorus were determined by different methods. The analyses of the soil samples show, that most of the grassland soils have a very low level of CAL-soluble phosphorus. Arable land has an average of a higher proportion of CAL-soluble phosphorus in the topsoil than grassland. The levels of water-soluble phosphorus in the uppermost 15 cm are in some cases very high. Consequently, the risk of higher phosphorus losses in surface runoff in dissolved form on slopes is on arable land and grassland high. The soils of the study area indicate high phosphorus sorption capacities and a low degree of phosphorus saturation. Therefore, also the risk of increased phosphorus losses by leaching seems to be low. Concerning grassland, the “Richtlinie für SachgerechteDüngung” (BMLFUW, 2006) is only a rough tool for fertilizer recommendations and should be urgently reviewed. For environmentally friendly phosphorus fertilizer application, the farmers, the policy, the fertilizer industry, the agricultural technology and research are challenged.
