Covering ridges in potato production on sloping fields is getting more and more important because of the increasing number of heavy rains and special culture management measurers. The objective of this master thesis in 2011 was to test the effects of different organic materials as coverage material on potato ridges in traditional potato cultivation on the soil parameters, on tuber yield and selected quality parameters of starch potatoes. Three field studies were carried out (biological and conventional cultivation). Results have shown that in all three test locations average morning temperatures in ridges covered by chopped first grassland cut, by chopped hay and by chopped clover were significantly higher than in the uncovered plots as well as in the plots covered by compost or by a compost-aspolit-mixture. Ridges covered by first grassland cut reached an increase in tuber yield of up to 30%. Due to tramlines caused by the compost spreader, however, the actual yield increase was reduced to 12%. Starch content was not significantly influenced by coverage. In addition, first grassland cut coverage has a preserving effect on the form and stability of the ridges and thereby helps to avoid soil loss.
