Abstract:
Cadmium (Cd) contaminated soils are of rising concern due to the toxic effects that Cd has upon environment. Metal smelter activities and the use of phosphate fertilizers and biosolids in agriculture are considered to be the main causes of soil pollution with Cd. Metals stay in the soil because they cannot be biologically degraded. This results in a possible transmission into ground waters as well as integration in agricultural products. Soil microorganisms (MOs) may help in rendering the metals unavailable to plants or in enhancing metal availability to phytoextraction crops in soil remediation. To this end, a pot experiment investigating the influence of two different microorganisms (EX72 and RX232) on the uptake of Cd and Zinc (Zn) by two different pea genotypes in low and high Cd polluted soils was conducted. Pea line 1 (3C-1) was considered to be Cd tolerant and pea line 2 (41A4) Cd sensitive. The plants grew for nearly two months under greenhouse conditions. The microbial inoculations did not bear statistically proven effects on the Cd/Zn concentrations in shoots, however, a tendency of lower Cd uptake in the sensitive pea line and higher Cd uptake in the tolerant pea line in high Cd contaminated soil could be distinguished. The overall findings of the conducted analysis infer that the factor pea line exerted a stronger effect on Cd tolerance as opposed to the effects of the microbial inoculation. Further investigations in this field are necessary to discover more about the interactions between different types of plants and MOs.
