Abstract:
The farrowing pen of Wels was constructed in such a way as to adapt to the special needs of sows and to also include the new terms of reference in organic farming. The housing system was characterised by three separate function areas. One of the advantages of the lying area was that it could be closed. All measurements of the working processes and the working elements were done by work observation directly in the housing system of “LFZ Raumberg Gumpenstein”. The working time was measured by means of a Pocket PC and a special measuring software. For the statistic analyse, EXCEL has been used. In the experimental farm, the sows were remaining only for 21 days in the farrowing pen. The working processes were subdivided into routine works and special works. The routine works consisted of transport of the food to the barn, the feeding of the sows, the controling of the sows and the piglets, the mucking out of the dung corridor, the intersperse of the dung corridor and filling the hay rack. The working time for the routine works needed per sow and day was 3.99 AKmin. In comparison with the FAT – farrowing pen, this value can be considered as low. The special works included the inoculation of the piglets, putting in the earmarks, the castration of the male piglets with and without general anaesthesia, washing the whole pen and the dung corridor, and propagating the farrowing pen for the next sows. It should be noted that the putting down of the sows and the piglets in the barn was not included in the study. For twelve piglets, six of them male, the time required for castration per sow and passage was 25.9 AKmin without general anaesthesia. The castration using general anaesthesia took around 31.2 AKmin. The total duration without general anaesthesia took around 1.82 AKh per sow and passage and with general anaesthesia it took about 1.90 AKh. On basis of literature data for biological farrowing pen, this value could be classified as very lowly.
