In semi-arid environments in East Austria there are still concerns that cover crops may increase soil water depletion with negative effects on subsequent cash crop yields. The present field experiment conducted in 2009 at the research farm in Groß-Enzersdorf is part of a series of experiments that examined the influence of cover crops on soil water storage. Weather conditions in 2009 were favourable because of higher temperatures and lower precipitation than on average. Cover crops (mustard, phacelia and field peas) and a mixture of mustard, phacelia and common vetch were compared with bare soil. Plots were arranged in a randomized block design with three replications and were planted on 27 August. Data from the leaf area index, above ground biomass, canopy coverage and soil water storage were gathered. Mustard and phacelia had a fast juvenile development and average yields. The development of the mixture took longer but the yield was at the same level as phacelia despite the total failure of common vetch. Soil water storage showed no statistical difference between bare soil and the cover crop treatments at the end of the vegetation period (Dec. 8). Bare soil showed significantly higher water consumption than mustard during the winter period (8.12.-17.3.) and in total (9.9.-17.3.) significantly higher water consumption than mustard and Phacelia. The yields of the cash crop maize showed no significant difference between the treatments. For the estimation of the components of the water balance the modelling software DAISY was used. The results of the simulation illustrated that the amount of transpiration of the cover crops were compensated by the exceeding evaporation of bare soil. The results are quite similar to those of the field experiments taken in Hollabrunn in the years from 1999 to 2010. This experiment demonstrates once again that the risk of growing cover crops with respect to the yield of cash crops is low.
