The aim of this diploma thesis was to study the function of a heat pump dehumidifier for hay drying in practice. The test facility at LFZ Raumberg-Gumpenstein is a box dryer consisting of a centrifugal fan (22 kW) and a dehumidifier heat pump (16 kW) with the necessary control and regulation technology. The roof is designed as a solar collector with 410 m² net area. With a recirculation flap switching between roof suction and recirculation mode is possible. Measurement data (air conditions, power consumption, hay data) of four drying passages were evaluated. The fan run time differed from 28 to 107 hours. The drying rate during roof suction mode was about 2 to 3 times the rate of drying in the air recirculation mode. The saturation deficit of the drying air could be increased by the dehumidifier up to 82 %. There was a linear relationship between the relative humidity before the dehumidifier and the warming and humidification through the dehumidifier. The higher the relative humidity before the dehumidifier was, the higher was the warming and humidifying. The specific energy consumption per kg water was 0.39 to 0.62 kWh/kg and based on the DM 112—309 kWh/t. The variable operating costs were 2.0 to 5.6 cents/kg DM respectively 1.7 to 4.6 cents/kg hay (current price 18 cents/kWh).
