Forschungsschwerpunkt

Our main research activities are in the area of plant biotechnology, and we are using cell biology approaches to understand intracellular protein storage and endomembrane dynamics in specialized cell types such as endosperm. We also utilize this knowledge for the production of high-value recombinant proteins in seed and leaf crops, thus combining applied aspects of plant biotechnology with fundamental research questions in cell biology. To follow up progressive changes of the highly dynamic endomembrane system in cereal endosperm cells we combine live cell imaging techniques with electron microscopy and 3D tomography. In addition, we have a proven track record for manipulating major crop species (barley, wheat, maize and rice), and we are using this ability for the application of new plant breeding technologies, in particular genome editing, to improve plant performance and to generate mutants of academic and commercial interest.
