Mathew Herrnegger

Research Focus

Dr. Mathew Herrnegger is Senior Scientist and Deputy Head of the Institute of Hydrology and Water Management (HyWa) at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU). After completing his degree in Land and Water Management and Engineering, he earned his PhD in hydrology at the same institute. His research focuses on the development of hydrological models, in particular the COSERO model, as well as the integration of remote sensing data, artificial intelligence, and machine learning into water management applications. He investigates the impacts of climate change on water resources and hydropower, both in the Alpine region and in East Africa, where he leads several international research projects. He is involved in numerous national and international research projects and has published on a wide range of topics in hydrology and water management. Alongside his research, he is active in university teaching and regularly supervises students in their academic theses.
