Environmental impacts of crisps
Abstract
Around 200,000 tonnes of potatoes per year are needed for the production of crisps by the Lorenz company. Added to this is the consumption of 30,000 tonnes of sunflower oil. The production is accompanied by the respective land consumption for the cultivation of potatoes and sunflowers as well as the related upstream processes such as the production of seeds, soil cultivation, fertilisation and harvesting, but also processes such as storage, packaging or transport. In the first part of the study, a comprehensive assessment of the environmental impacts of the production of crisps is carried out for the first time. The aim of the analyses is to present the environmental impact of 1000 tonnes of potato crisps over the entire life cycle. In the second part of the study, the potential for optimisation in potato cultivation and potato processing at the three potato crisps production sites is examined. The impact of potential optimisation measures on the life cycle assessment is examined in a scenario/sensitivity analysis.
