Molecular and ethological analysis of intraspecific variation of the Alpine Ips typographus populations.
Abstract
PheropraxR is used to control mass outbreaks of Ips typographus in Europe. However, different populations react to these traps in different ways. This may be due to the genetic variation in each bark beetle population. In a genetically uniform population (as found in Scandinavia), beetles will collect in the pheromone traps if the relevant genotype responds positively to the pheromone. However, the traps will work less well with populations characterised by many genotypes (as in Central Europe), if most of these genotypes do not recognise the synthetic pheromone. Given their intrapopulation diversity, alpine populations are well suited to the kind of research proposed for investigating this issue. In this project we want to find out 1) if there is a correlation between the capture rate of the synthetic pheromone trap and the genetic variability of the population, 2) if there is a genetic difference between the genotypes captured in pheromone traps and those captured by unbaited trap trees and 3) if each different genotype produces a distinct behavioural response to the synthetic pheromone.
