Abstract
Carbon dioxide, which is purified from flue gas, is used for the cultivation of phototrophic microorganisms (cyanobacteria, purple photosynthetic bacteria, microalgae). Promising strains are selected by a screening process. These strains must be fast growing and have high product yields (e.g. PHB to replace fossile plastics). A suitable photobioreactor system is designed and a reactor at pilot-scale will be built. From the produced biomass, the product (e.g. PHB) will be isolated and the residual biomass will enter a biogas process. Via anaerobic digestion, energy (biogas) is produced and the nutrients will be made available. These nutrients are recirculated for algae cultivation.
